What Is a Dental Bridge? What You Need to Know Before Choosing One

basic-black-and-white-bridge-illustration-sqYour teeth don’t just help you chew. They support each other and play an important role in your overall oral health. Losing even one tooth can lead to changes over time. That’s where a dental bridge comes in.

How a Dental Bridge Works

Think of a bridge over a road. It connects two solid points and spans a gap. A dental bridge works in much the same way.

The teeth on either side of the gap are prepared and fitted with crowns. Between them sits a false tooth, called a pontic. The structure is fixed in place, so it doesn’t need to be removed for cleaning.

In many cases, the process takes two visits. First, the adjacent teeth are prepared and impressions are taken. Then the final bridge is fitted, designed to blend in with your smile.

The Benefits of a Bridge

For people missing one or two teeth, a bridge can be a practical and cost-effective option. Because it is fixed, it can feel stable and allow normal day-to-day use, such as eating and speaking.

The process is also relatively straightforward, with a clear and predictable timeline compared to some other options.

When a Bridge May Not Be the Right Fit

While bridges can be a suitable option, there are some important limitations to consider.

A bridge relies on the strength of the supporting teeth. If there has been significant bone loss from gum disease, the foundation may not be strong enough. Load is another factor. When one or more teeth are missing, the anchor teeth take on additional work. Beyond a certain point, this can affect how the bridge performs over time.

It’s also important to understand that if one of those teeth develops a problem in the future, the entire bridge may be affected.

So, Is a Dental Bridge Right for You?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. A bridge can be a suitable option in the right situation. In other cases, alternatives such as implants may be discussed.

“When a patient comes in with a missing tooth, I want them to leave with a clear picture of all their options. A bridge may be a suitable option, depending on the condition of the surrounding teeth and gums.”
