Does teeth whitening work with crowns, veneers, or fillings?
Crowns, veneers, and fillings, and other restorations are made of materials like composite resin, porcelain, and zirconia. While these restorations are designed to blend in beautifully with your own natural teeth, they cannot be whitened using teeth whitening products.
When we plan a restoration, filling, or a full mouth reconstruction, we’ll discuss your long-term plans for your smile. If you’d like your smile to be whiter and brighter, it’s best to whiten your teeth before we design your restorations. This way, we can plan the restorations to blend in with your new shade.
When we whiten your teeth in our office using the Zoom! system, you’ll receive a take-home kit made from impressions of your own teeth. With regular touch-ups and a refresher whitening treatment every year or two, you’ll never have to worry about your restorations standing out or appearing to be a different colour than the rest of your teeth.
Veneers, crowns, and fillings are designed to be stain-resistant, so they won’t pick up pigments from your food and drink the same way your natural enamel does. With good home care, including regular brushing and flossing, and twice-yearly check-ups and cleanings, your restorations are likely to last for fifteen years or more!
